Rotterdam has held the top spot in the European container market for years, with Antwerp as a strong runner-up. But that gap is closing fast.
Last year, container throughput surged by 8.1% to 13.5 million TEU, bringing the port within striking distance of Rotterdam, the long-time leader. Thanks to this strong growth, Antwerp’s total cargo volume also saw a 2.3% increase, reaching 278 million tons.
