How to optimize container transport from Rotterdam to Germany

Most companies already know the route. when moving containers between Rotterdam and Germany. What they haven’t figured out is how to run it without losing money on the little things. Book too late, pick the wrong container or lose visibility on a shipment. It costs more than most shippers realize.

For a full breakdown of how container trucking works and what to consider, we’ve covered that separately. This is a guide to running your container transport smarter once you’re already using it.

Book your container transport earlier than you think you need to

Import capacity on this corridor gets tight fast, most shippers underestimate by how much. If you want a real guarantee on capacity, plan on booking at least a week ahead. Once the container lands, the clock moves fast too. Most import containers need to be on the road within 24 to 48 hours of arrival. A partner who takes a day to respond is already creating a problem for you.

Falco Lines builds inland transport into the booking itself. We quote most requests within 15 minutes, which gives you room to lock in capacity well before your container needs to move.

Match your container size to the cargo

Most shippers stick with whatever size they used last time, whether it still fits or not. We need to know what is being transported and where it’s headed before we quote. After that we match the container. Options include: 20ft, 40ft, 40ft high cube, open top, flatrack, tank or reefer. Simple as that.

Reefer containers raise the stakes further. Get the temperature wrong and the cargo arrives ruined before it ever reaches Frankfurt. Running reefers is part of our daily schedule, same as any other container.

A few things that can effect the price on a shipment:

  • Rate scales with TEU and container count together
  • Toll costs stack on routes through Germany, with German Maut and the Dutch truck toll (live since July 1 2026) both charged per kilometer, scaled by weight and emission class
  • Temperature requirements narrow which carriers can even take the job
That gap between the right call and the convenient one adds up fast across dozens of shipments a year.

One way transport or round trip transport?

The Netherlands to Germany corridor runs both directions at real volume, so round trip transport is often available where a one way booking would send a truck back empty. Someone pays for that empty leg, and it’s usually built into your rate whether you see it or not.

Matching supply and demand across routes is part of daily planning at Falco Lines. Fewer empty runs means a lower cost per container and less diesel burned for nothing, which ties straight into keeping emissions down, one of our actual operating goals.

At Falco Lines, we’ll tell you straight up whether your route qualifies for round trip pricing.

A logistics partner with a client portal beats a dashboard alone

Plenty of providers hand you a dashboard and call it service. A dashboard doesn’t call you when a border crossing backs up. It also doesn’t explain why a driver’s running late. A person needs to do that.

That’s the butler in logistics idea in practice. Jasper Smit for example, our Transport Architect, is the person behind the route planning that keeps this working day to day. And Stefan Blaak leads the planning team that keeps supply and demand matched across our network, so the routes hold up when volumes shift.

That’s someone who already knows your account before you have to explain it again.

Expanding beyond Germany into container transport Europe

Germany’s still the busiest corridor we run, but France is picking up fast. Round trip transport into France is already running and the same approach applies here too.

Book it early, pick the right container and stay close to a partner who actually tracks where your shipment is. If your import and export shipments are starting to stretch beyond Germany, it’s worth asking whether your current setup can keep up.

The container trucking routes we cover

We run container trucking out of Rotterdam, Antwerp, Bremen, and Bremerhaven, with inland depots along the Rhine extending our reach further. Germany’s the busiest corridor, but Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, and the Czech Republic are all in scope too.

Every account gets one direct point of contact. Status runs live through our client portal, we quote most requests within 15 minutes. We’re ISO 9001 certified, and we’ve been running this operation since 2013, with a dedicated Belgium team led by Davey Meijdam for shipments through Antwerp.

If you want to tighten up your container transport on the Rotterdam to Germany route, get in touch and we’ll have a quote back to you within 15 minutes.
