What container transport from Rotterdam to Germany actually costs
There’s no single answer, and anyone quoting you a fixed rate without knowing the details is guessing. What actually drives the price and how the equation adds up:
Route distance and Maut
Rotterdam to Duisburg is roughly 200 km. Rotterdam to Nürnberg is closer to 675 km. German Maut (road or highway toll) is calculated by axle and distance, and on a loaded 40ft that adds up fast.
+ Container type
Standard 20ft and 40ft HC are the most liquid. Reefer containers require a power connection at both ends, which limits your options and adds cost. Flatracks and open tops need specialist equipment.
+ Weight
We handle up to 40 tonnes total, with truck, chassis, container and cargo counted together. Loads above roughly 24 tonnes net cargo often need route-specific permits, depending on bridge clearances per Bundesland.

Rhine-Ruhr: our highest-volume corridor. Duisburg, Neuss, Düsseldorf and Köln sit closest to the Dutch border, with strong container flows in both directions.
Rhine-Main and South: Frankfurt, Mannheim, Germersheim. Automotive and chemical strongholds. Germersheim is particularly relevant for automotive parts flows.
Bavaria: Nürnberg and the Munich corridor. Longer haul, consistent demand from manufacturing and retail distribution.
Hamburg: Regularly receives containers from Rotterdam by road when sea schedules don’t align or inland delivery is faster.

Planning your Germany transport
Time-critical shipments need lead time. For standard containers, five working days is the minimum we’d recommend. Reefer and specialised equipment need more, since carrier options are narrower and coordination takes longer.
Maut (and permits are our problem, not yours. Germany’s weight and dimension regulations vary by Bundesland, and permit requirements for overweight or overdimensional loads aren’t always straightforward. We handle the applications and know which routes to avoid.
Port gate timing is something most shippers underestimate. Rotterdam and Antwerp gate-out windows don’t always align with truck availability. We coordinate both ends to keep demurrage charges off your invoice wherever we can.
